Questions we hear a lot
Everything people ask before their first visit, and about our treatments.
Your first visit
I've never had a massage. What should I expect?
Your therapist starts with a short conversation: what brought you in, where you hold tension, and anything about your health we should know. Then they step out while you undress to your comfort level and get under the sheet on the table. The session is quiet unless you'd like to talk, and you can ask for changes at any time. Our first-visit page walks through it step by step.
What should I wear? Do I have to undress? How does draping work?
Wear whatever is comfortable. For most massages you undress only as far as you're comfortable; many people leave underpants on, and some stay partly dressed. You're covered by a sheet the whole time, and only the area being worked is uncovered, then covered again. For Trager you stay dressed in light, breathable clothing, and no oils are used.
Can I ask for lighter or deeper pressure, or for a quiet session?
Absolutely. Every session begins with a conversation so we can discuss your goals, preferences, comfort level, areas of concern, and how you're feeling that day. This allows us to tailor the session specifically to your needs before you even get on the table.
Once your session begins, you remain in charge of your experience at all times. Your therapist welcomes feedback and can adjust your session immediately if something would help you feel more comfortable or supported.
You are always welcome to request:
- Lighter or deeper pressure
- More conversation or complete quiet
- A warmer or cooler table
- Additional support, such as elevating your head, neck, knees, or legs
- Changes to focus areas during the session
Massage is not something that is done to you. It is a collaborative process designed to help your body feel safe, supported, and able to relax. When your nervous system can settle and shift out of “fight or flight” mode, your body is better able to release tension, restore balance, and access its natural healing abilities.
Your comfort, sense of safety, and therapeutic goals are always our priority. We encourage you to communicate at any time during your session so we can create the experience that serves you best.
What forms will I fill out, and why do you ask about my health?
Please fill in your intake form online before your first appointment. The link comes in your appointment reminders, a week before your visit and again the day before, so there's nothing to fill in until then. No mobile phone, or can't do it online? Come in 20 minutes before your first appointment and fill in a one-page form here.
We ask about your health, medications and any injuries so we can keep the session safe and tailor it to your needs. Some conditions will alter how we massage or could warrant us asking you to get a doctor's approval prior to your appointment.
What if I don't know which massage to book?
Book a therapeutic massage, which is shaped around what you tell us, or call (717) 466-4410 and we'll help you choose. You can also start from how you feel.
Is it normal to feel sore after a massage? What should I do after a massage?
Some people feel a little sore, tender, or tired for a day or two after a massage, especially after deeper therapeutic work or if an area has been holding tension for a long time. This is a normal response and usually passes quickly.
Think about holding your fist tightly clenched for five or ten minutes. When you finally release your hand and straighten your fingers, how does it feel? Most likely, your hand would feel a bit sore, stiff, or achy as it adjusts to letting go. Many of us carry similar holding patterns throughout our bodies without even realizing it. During a massage, those muscles and tissues are encouraged to soften and release. As your body adapts to these changes, some temporary soreness can occur.
When your session is over, take your time getting up from the table. Many people feel deeply relaxed, and moving slowly allows your body to adjust before returning to your day. Once you're up, drink some water and continue to stay hydrated throughout the day. Gentle movement, stretching, or a relaxed walk can be helpful, while strenuous activity is best avoided for the rest of the day if possible.
Many clients leave feeling refreshed, lighter, and more connected to their bodies. Listening to what your body needs, whether that's movement, rest, or extra hydration, can help you get the most from your treatment.
If anything feels unusual, overly uncomfortable, or simply doesn't seem right, please let us know. We're happy to answer questions and help ensure you have the best possible experience.
Are your therapists licensed?
Yes. All of our massage therapists are licensed by the Pennsylvania State Board of Massage Therapy. Each therapist's license number is provided on their profile and can be verified through the state's public license lookup.
Do you see children or teenagers?
Yes. Clients 18 and over can come on their own. For anyone 17 or younger, babies included, Pennsylvania law requires a parent to be in the massage room for the whole session.

Booking and policies
How do I book?
Most massages book online: choose your treatment, length and therapist. Couples massage, SoulSync Alchemy, weddings and events are arranged with us directly by text or call. Texting is the quickest way to reach us; we check email once a day.
When should I arrive, and what if I'm running late?
For your first appointment, please arrive 15 minutes early to complete any necessary paperwork and discuss your goals for the session.
For returning visits, arriving 5 to 10 minutes early is plenty of time to get settled.
If you arrive late, your session will still end at the scheduled time so that other clients are not affected. The full session fee will apply. For example, if you book a 60-minute massage and arrive 15 minutes late, your session will be 45 minutes in length and will be charged at the full 60-minute rate.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in helping us stay on schedule for all clients.
What is your cancellation and no-show policy?
We respectfully ask for at least 24 hours' notice during business hours if you need to cancel or reschedule an appointment.
Appointments canceled or changed with less than 24 hours' notice will be charged the full session fee.
SoulSync Alchemy appointments require a minimum of 72 hours' notice for cancellation or rescheduling.
Appointment times are reserved exclusively for you, and last-minute openings are often difficult to fill. For this reason, missed appointments and no-shows will be charged the full session fee.
Thank you for your understanding and for respecting the time set aside for your care.
Do I tip? What is your gratuity policy?
Gratuity is entirely at your discretion. We do not have a tipping policy, and tips are never expected, but they are always appreciated.
What payment do you take? Can I use an HSA or FSA, or insurance?
We accept credit/debit cards, cash, and checks.
HSA and FSA cards are welcome, provided your plan allows their use for massage therapy services. We do not bill insurance directly; however, we can provide an itemized invoice and, if needed, session notes for you to submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement.
Please make checks payable to Mindful Massage & Holistic Centre, Ltd.
Returned Check Policy: Any check returned by the bank for insufficient funds or any other reason will be the responsibility of the client. The client will be charged for all bank fees, returned check fees, and any associated costs incurred by Mindful Massage & Holistic Centre, Ltd. as a result of the returned payment.
Do you sell gift certificates? Do they expire?
Yes. Gift certificates are available for purchase in person at the centre.
Simply call or text ahead, and we'll have one prepared for you.
Gift certificates are intended for the recipient's use and are non-transferable to the purchaser.
Each certificate includes an expiration date as a gentle reminder to schedule and enjoy the experience. However, we honor all gift certificates regardless of the expiration date listed.
About our treatments
What is lymphatic drainage, and how is it different from a regular massage?
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle technique that uses light, slow, rhythmic movements to encourage the flow of lymph fluid throughout the body. Unlike a regular massage, it does not use deep pressure or target muscle tension. Most people find it deeply relaxing and calming. More about lymphatic drainage.
Can I have lymphatic drainage after surgery? What is a Certified Lymphedema Therapist?
Lymphatic drainage may be beneficial after surgery, but it is important to begin treatment only with your surgeon's approval and according to their recommended timeline.
Alecia is a Certified Lymphedema Therapist (CLT) who has completed specialized training in Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) and Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) through the Academy of Lymphatic Studies. She works with clients experiencing swelling, lymphedema, and post-surgical recovery, providing safe, evidence-informed care tailored to each individual's needs.
Who shouldn't have lymphatic drainage?
Please let us know before booking if you have a blood clot, a history of DVT (deep vein thrombosis), an active infection such as cellulitis, a fever, heart failure, kidney failure, or are currently undergoing active cancer treatment. In some cases, lymphatic drainage may not be appropriate, or we may require medical clearance from your healthcare provider before treatment.
Can I have a massage while pregnant?
Yes. Prenatal massage is performed using a specialized pregnancy cushion, allowing you to relax comfortably while receiving gentle, pregnancy-safe bodywork.
If massage is new to you, we see clients during the second and third trimesters, right up until birth. Clients who receive regular massage (at least monthly) may continue throughout their pregnancy.
Please check with your pregnancy provider before booking and tell us how far along you are when scheduling.
What is the Trager Approach? Do I stay dressed?
The Trager Approach® uses gentle rocking, shimmying, holding, and elongation movements, along with supportive pauses, to help the body release habitual patterns of tension and discover greater ease, freedom, and comfort in movement.
Yes, you remain fully clothed throughout the session. Please wear light, breathable clothing that allows for unrestricted movement. For women, a loose-fitting bra, sports bra, or no bra may be most comfortable, depending on your preference. No oils or lotions are used.
Melissa is a certified Trager practitioner and also teaches simple Mentastics® movement explorations that you can take home to support continued ease and body awareness between sessions.
What is gua sha facial massage? Will it leave marks?
Gua Sha facial massage uses a smooth, flat stone that gently glides over the face, jaw, and neck with facial oil, combined with hands-on massage techniques. The pressure used on the face is very light, so it should not leave marks or bruising. You may notice a mild flush or pinkness afterward, which typically fades within a short time.
Please let us know if you have sensitive or irritated skin, a skin condition, recent facial procedures, or if you take blood-thinning medication, so we can ensure the treatment is appropriate for you.
What should I know about the CBD oil add-on?
CBD oil can be added to any massage and may help support relaxation, ease feelings of muscle tension, and enhance overall comfort during your session.
If you are pregnant or participate in workplace or athletic drug testing, this add-on may not be appropriate for you. Topical CBD is generally considered unlikely to show up on a drug test, but results cannot be guaranteed.
Couples massage: are we in the same room? Can we choose different pressure?
Absolutely. You'll be together in the same room, with a dedicated therapist for each person. That means everyone can select their preferred pressure and customize the session to their needs. Couples appointments are scheduled directly with us rather than online.
What is SoulSync Alchemy?

Your health, privacy and our standards
Is massage therapy a substitute for medical care?
No. Massage therapy and bodywork are complementary wellness services and are not a substitute for medical evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, or ongoing care provided by a physician or other licensed healthcare professional. Clients should consult their healthcare provider regarding any medical concerns, injuries, illnesses, or conditions requiring medical attention.
What is the scope of massage therapy in Pennsylvania?
Under Pennsylvania law, licensed massage therapists provide massage therapy and bodywork to support health, relaxation, stress reduction, mobility, and overall well-being. Massage therapists do not diagnose illnesses or diseases, prescribe medications, perform medical procedures, chiropractic adjustments, or physical therapy treatments.
Why do I need to disclose my medical history?
For your safety, it is important to disclose all known medical conditions, injuries, surgeries, medications, and other health concerns before your session. Certain health conditions may require modification of treatment, physician clearance, referral to another healthcare provider, or may be contraindicated for massage. Clients are responsible for informing the practitioner of any changes to their health status.
What if I am currently under a physician's care?
If you are currently being treated by a physician or another healthcare provider, please inform your massage therapist before your session. Depending on your condition, your therapist may recommend obtaining medical clearance or may adjust the session to ensure your safety and comfort.
What are my responsibilities as a client?
Clients are responsible for providing accurate and complete health information, communicating any discomfort during a session, and informing the practitioner of any changes in their condition. Failure to disclose relevant medical information may affect the therapist's ability to provide safe and appropriate care.
Is my information kept confidential?
Yes. Client records and health information are maintained in accordance with applicable privacy and confidentiality requirements. Information is not shared without your consent except as required by law.
What is your professional conduct policy?
Mindful Massage & Holistic Centre is committed to maintaining the highest standards of professional, ethical, and therapeutic care. We maintain a safe, respectful, and professional therapeutic environment for all clients and practitioners. Any inappropriate, sexually suggestive, abusive, threatening, or harassing behavior will result in the immediate termination of the session, full payment being due for the scheduled appointment, and refusal of future services. When warranted, incidents may be documented and reported to local law enforcement authorities.
